Overview
Bilgola Beach is a mellow beachbreak that stands apart from the other banks in the area, tending to roll and crumble over the sandbars rather than throw up steep walls. That softer character makes it a calmer alternative to the busier breaks at Newport and Avalon, and the semi-tropical setting makes it a pleasant place to hang around. Watch for rocks in the lineup at each end of the beach.
When It Works
The break draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with northeast (NE) the best match. Peaky windswells are where it comes alive, throwing up some nice corners with both lefts and rights over the uneven reef and sand. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it holds waves consistently across the seasons.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. The beach also tucks nicely out of the northeast sea breezes, which helps keep it clean when they kick in. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners and improvers finding their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There are restrooms, showers, and lifeguard cover on hand. For parking you have a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options nearby.
