Overview
Black Middens is a rare, sketchy left reef that breaks over boulders in the mouth of the Tyne River. Two piers built to protect shipping entering the harbour shelter the spot heavily, so it only comes to life on the biggest swells. It is shallow, heavy, polluted, and sits in a busy sea lane, which makes it a wave for confident surfers rather than a casual session.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northeast to southeast, with a northeast (NE) swell the best match. Because the piers block so much energy, you need a genuine monster northeast or straight east swell before anything gets through to break here. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, so this is very much a big-wave setup that stays quiet until a serious swell arrives.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. It breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Between the shallow boulder reef, the heavy left, the polluted water, and the boat traffic in the sea lane, it demands real experience and a clear head before you paddle out.
