Black Rock / Aussie Pipe Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Black Rock, also known as Aussie Pipe, Wreck Bay, or Summercloud Bay, is one of the hollowest and most photogenic waves in Australia, tucked in beside Jervis Bay and Booderee National Park. It's an intense reefbreak that peels both left and right over a shallow, uneven bottom of cunjevoi and urchins, so there's no margin for error when it's firing. The land here returned to its traditional owners in 1955, and the spot is regarded as the unofficial home of Indigenous surfing.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from southeast through south, with south (S) swell the best match. It's a highly consistent setup that works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there's a wide window of size to play with when everything lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert-only wave, breaking hard and shallow over reef. Expect a busy lineup whenever it's on, and know that the local surfers can be protective, especially when the crowd builds on south swells and northeast seabreezes at mid tide.

Access

There's a car park with free parking, and camping is available if you want to stick around for the next swell.
