Blowing Rocks Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Blowing Rocks takes its name from the limestone rocks lining the shoreline, and when a sizable swell is running, geysers of whitewater spume up through the outcroppings. Plenty of people show up for that spectacle as much as the surf itself. On the days it does break, hollow lefts grind over a shallow reef.

When It Works

This is a fickle spot that really isn't worth surfing under four feet, so wait for some size before you commit. It draws swell from north-northeast to east-northeast and is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. The season runs through autumn, winter, and spring, and can pick up hurricane swells. Even then it only comes together on occasion, so keep your expectations in check.

Wind and Tide

Stiff offshore winds hold the barrels open here, and the offshore direction is west-southwest, with a workable wind window running from south through west-southwest to northwest. It breaks through mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Bring a shortboard. The wave suits intermediate to expert surfers who are comfortable sitting over sharp reef. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a bit reserved. Paddling is easy on an average day but gets more challenging on bigger swells.

Access

Getting in is easy. Once you're out, keep an eye on the shallow reef and the inside rocks, which can easily cost you a fin.
