Bob Hall Pier is the crown jewel of Texas Coastal Bend surfing and the most popular spot on the coast. Stable, shallow sandbars sit on both sides of the pier and pull in the full range of swells, firing off punchy waves with steep drops and fast walls that reward strong surfers.
When It Works
The sand is relatively stable and consistent, sending up bowls to the north and south of the pier depending on swell direction, with secondary and tertiary peaks on each side working off both ground and windswell. It draws swell from southwest through north to northeast, and southeast (SE) is the optimal direction. Both lefts and rights break here, and it works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. It stays consistent and is at its best through spring and autumn. Line up a solid groundswell with offshore wind and you can find hollow, steep drops that blend into long, workable, pushy walls.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. It works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave suited to a shortboard or fish. Expect a busy, often packed lineup whenever it works. It is one of the most competitive setups in Texas with plenty of local chargers, but the vibe stays relatively positive and friendly. The rip by the pier makes it easy to paddle out, though longshore currents can make it tough to hold your position on the pier bowls. Keep an eye out for sharks, and remember that fishermen share the pier and sometimes cast into the pack.
Access
Getting in is easy, with free parking right at the pier. There is a car park alongside paid, metered, and roadside options, plus restrooms, showers, and camping on hand.
