Boca Barranca Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Boca Barranca is a long left-hand point at a river mouth, and one of the better waves in Costa Rica. On a solid south to southwest swell the wall trickles and peels through as much as 750 metres of sections, so rides here are measured in minutes rather than seconds. It breaks over uneven reef and sand, and its closeness to San José makes it one of the easier quality points in the country to reach.

When It Works

Swell comes in from south through southwest, with south the best match. The point is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and summer is the season to target. It can be somewhat inconsistent, so it rewards patience, but when the setup lines up it delivers a genuinely high-quality left. Once the swell gets solid, expect current to run, the way it does at most points.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind. Low and mid tide are the windows to aim for, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers, and it takes just about any craft: shortboards, funboards, fish, and especially longboards, which the wave's long peeling sections were made for. Contests are regularly held here. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, with a somewhat reserved atmosphere among the locals, so read the pecking order before you paddle for everything. Water quality is dubious thanks to river mouth runoff, and it gets worse after rain. Crocodiles, pollution, and petty theft are all worth keeping in mind.

Access

Drive to the end of the bridge, pay for a spot in the car park, then walk down to the river mouth.
