Overview
Boca de Apisa is Colima's last quality beachbreak, breaking thick and fast over sand. In a medium south swell it cracks hard and can peel into long rivermouth lefts once the sand has settled. Peaks to the north and south of the main break also come alive in winter's northwest swells.
When It Works
This is a consistent beachbreak that draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with south the best match. Both lefts and rights break here, and it works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Just south, a Sunset-like reef only comes to life on the bigger swells.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind. The bank can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Boca de Apisa suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet. Take the setting seriously, though: strong currents run through here and alligators are a genuine hazard. If you want something more forgiving, the northwest-facing beachbreaks at Punta San Telmo are easier.
