Overview
Boneyard is a heavy right-hander that breaks over boulders and urchin-sprinkled rock, and it's strictly an experts-only reef. The takeoff is sucky at the drop zone before the wave runs into a fast, barrelling pocket and a rippable wall. It sits under full protection from south wind, holding up even against southeast sea breezes.
When It Works
Boneyard draws swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), with east (E) the best match. It's most rewarding on northeast-to-east swells with a bit of water moving over the reef. The break is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and is moderately consistent. On smaller swells, lefts show up over the inside reef.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. Boneyard works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experts only. Keep watch for rips, sharks, and urchins, which are always lurking. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and know that the locals are always ready and will take the bulk of the sets.
