Overview
Bonsteel Park is a sand-bottomed beach break a few miles north of Sebastian Inlet on Brevard's southern coast. It's honestly more of a fishing spot than a surf destination, and it tends to get overlooked in favor of nearby Spanish House and Sebastian Inlet. Its most dependable role is as a gauge for how a swell's size is shifting as you head toward the Inlet. The water is usually very clean.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from north-northeast to east (NNE-E) and produces both rights and lefts over sand. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The best windows come in spring, autumn, and winter, with hurricane season adding to the mix. Wave quality here is modest, so a good day is more of a pleasant surprise than the norm.
Wind and Tide
Look for west-southwest (WSW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window that runs from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW). Low tide is the optimal call, and a rising tide is generally the better bet.
Local Tips
Bonsteel suits beginners and intermediates, and works with just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved. Paddling out isn't too bad, though it gets more challenging as the surf gets bigger. Keep an eye out for shoreline fishers and sharks.
