Brookings/South Jetty Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Brookings/South Jetty is a sand-bottomed beachbreak on the southern Oregon coast, tucked in behind the Chetco River Jetty. That jetty shelters it from the prevailing northwest summer winds, which makes it a rare warm-season haven when much of the coast is blown out. The peaks reel as rights and break reliably, so it tends to have surf on offer when other spots go flat.

When It Works

The bank draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), giving it a wide window to feed off. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so a foot or two is already good fun and it holds size up to around 8 ft (2.5 m). Consistency is a strong point here, and the sand bottom keeps the peaks breaking through most any tide.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to groom the faces, and easterly wind cleans it up nicely too. It can work across low, mid, and high, though a rising tide is generally the better call. Keep an eye on the low end of the tide, when it gets very shallow and the waves start to dredge.

Local Tips

This is a friendly spot for beginners, with mellow, forgiving waves. Expect a busy lineup when it's on. As with other northwest rivermouths, sharks are a genuine concern to keep in mind.

Access

Parking is easy, with a free car park fronting right onto the beach and a big RV park across the street. Restrooms and free outside showers round out the setup, making it one of the more comfortable stops on the southern Oregon coast.
