Overview
Buhne 16 Kampen is a sandy beach break sitting directly in front of the well-known Beach Bistro Buhne 16. Shifting, unstabilised sandbanks shape the waves here, and when they line up they produce long, slow rides that suit a longboard. Getting to the water means a decent walk through the dunes, which is part of why you can often find yourself surfing alone. The beach also hosts the Sylter Longboard Festival each September, drawing around a hundred of the best German and international longboarders.
When It Works
Swell reaches the bank from anywhere between southwest and north, and northwest is the direction that gets the most out of it. The break works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, with waves peeling both left and right off the sandbars.
Wind and Tide
Look for east wind to groom the faces. The bank comes to life around mid and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here suit intermediate surfers, and the slow, drawn-out shape makes it natural longboard territory.
Access
There's a car park at the beach, plus restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard. From the parking area, expect a long walk through the sand dunes to reach the water.
