Schleswig-Holstein is Germany's northernmost surf region, where sandy beach breaks pick up North Sea swell from the western quadrant and clean up under easterly offshore wind. Most of the surfing here sits on the North Sea island of Sylt, with a smaller cluster of spots facing the Baltic to the east.
Sylt is the heart of surfing in Schleswig-Holstein, holding the largest share of the region's breaks around Westerland, Kampen and Wenningstedt-Braderup. These are open, sandy beach breaks, forgiving and easy to read, which is why so many of them suit beginners and progressing intermediates. Notable spots include Badezeit Westerland, Brandenburger Strand Westerland and Buhne 16 Kampen, all clustered around Westerland and neighbouring Kampen.
Swell mostly arrives from the northwest through southwest, so the exposed west-facing beaches are the ones that come alive when North Sea and Atlantic lows push energy toward the island. Wind is the deciding factor here: an easterly blows offshore across these beaches and grooms the faces, while onshore westerlies leave them messy. Because the fetch is short, waves tend to be small and punchy rather than large. Many spots start working from around a foot and top out in the chest-to-head-high range, with the biggest sandbars occasionally reaching well overhead.
Tides matter less than swell and wind. Most breaks are best around mid tide and many hold through high tide too, so you usually have a wide window once the conditions line up. A handful also come in at low tide, giving more options as the sandbars shift.
The Baltic side, around Damp and Hohwacht, is a different animal. These spots rely on local wind swell rather than groundswell and turn on far less often, but they can be a sheltered fallback when the North Sea is blown out or flat. Bottoms are sand throughout the region, with a few boulder sections mixed in at some breaks to add shape.
For planning, look for a solid westerly swell paired with light easterly wind and aim for the mid-tide window. Beginners will find plenty of mellow, sandy-bottomed options on Sylt, while intermediates can chase the more exposed sandbars on the bigger, cleaner days.
