Overview
Bungan is a small beach tucked below the cliffs, reached by a long walk down the steps. It breaks over sand and picks up punchy waves even in smaller swells, and it often looks better from the water than it does from the top.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with northeast swell the best match. It stays consistent and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Most of the time you'll find beachbreak peaks through the centre, breaking both left and right. When a moderate northeast swell fills in, the rocks at the north end hold the sand and shape a point-style left. The south end is usually dumpy shorepound, but a stronger southeast swell hitting the rock platforms throws out some slabby righthanders.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Bungan suits beginners, and the peaks through the middle are the most forgiving place to start. Expect a busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There's free roadside parking, though the side streets get tight through summer, and the long flights of steps down deter a few.
