Bunmahon is an open, south-facing beachbreak that breaks over sand and throws up both lefts and rights. It can get hollow and carries more power than nearby Tramore, and the water quality is a good deal better despite the rivermouth feeding into the beach. That same rivermouth stirs up strong rips, so it pays to keep an eye on where you drift.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southwest through southeast, with a southwest (SW) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there's a broad window between too small and too big to bother with. It'll break on all tides once there's enough size, often serving up reforms and shorey close to the sand.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind to clean things up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, though mid tide is generally the pick, and a rising tide tends to be the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow beachbreak walls make this a friendly spot for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Park in town, or use the limited spaces at the west-end slipway; there's a car park with free parking as well as roadside options. Be mindful of the rivermouth, which pushes strong rips through the lineup.
