Overview
Cabedelo is a fun, flexible beachbreak tucked inside a protective jetty, throwing up playful wedges and good-quality walling waves. The jetty is known for its consistency and shelters the break, soaking up just about anything the North Atlantic sends in. It all comes down to the sand: after a big winter storm pushes the bank into place next to the jetty, the right turns into a superb performance wave with a tube section on the takeoff, while the left running into the jetty is shorter but just as good. In spring and summer it's less reliable, when the sand settles in a straighter line and the jetty wedge fades, though scattered peaks farther south still hold waves. It breaks over sand and offers both rights and lefts.
When It Works
Cabedelo is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so anywhere from waist high to double overhead. It draws swell from west-southwest to northwest, and the standout window runs September to May across autumn, winter and spring. Consistency hinges on the sand, so it comes alive once a proper winter storm has shaped the bank beside the jetty.
Wind and Tide
Look for an offshore wind from the east, with a workable wind window stretching from east-northeast to east-southeast. The big jetty adds extra shelter from northwest winds. On tides, it's best from just past low towards mid, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a busy, popular lineup when it's firing. It's an approachable spot that suits everyone from beginners to experts, and it works on shortboards, fish, longboards and bodyboards. Paddling out is pretty mellow, since the rip next to the jetty ferries you straight back to the peak. It can get heavy and wedgy, so pick your wave carefully.
Access
There's parking by the groyne and more to the south near the hospital. Worth knowing before you paddle out: the spot has a poor water-quality reputation and suffers from raw sewage discharge off the river.
