Overview
Caleta Sama is a heavy left pointbreak that peels over an uneven reef and throws short, powerful lefthanders. The take-off is usually steep, and on a big day it can hold a solid 15ft, so this is firmly expert territory.
When It Works
Caleta Sama comes alive in moderate to large south-southwest swells. It draws swell from south to west (S-W), with southwest (SW) the best match, and is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. It can be somewhat inconsistent, so it pays to check it when the swell genuinely lines up rather than expecting it to be on every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a serious wave for experts only, and the lineup tends to stay fairly quiet even when it's firing. About 20 km further south along the Inca Trail, Punta Colorado serves up a superbly hollow right reef that's a favourite of bodyboarders from Tacna.
