Cantinho da Baia is the "corner of the bay" at the end of Praia do Baleal, a crescent-shaped beach that curves toward town. It is a fun, flexible beach break that throws mostly long, walling rights, and it can turn hollow when there is some size behind the swell.
When It Works
The break comes to life on a big northerly or a medium northwest swell, drawing its direction from northwest to north-northwest (NW-NNW). It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, giving a wide window from waist-high fun to overhead. This is a consistent spot, and the best stretches run September to November and March to May. Look for quality rights that peel long and occasionally barrel, with the odd left in the mix.
Wind and Tide
Aim for south-southwest (SSW) offshore wind, with a workable window running south to southwest (S-SW). It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call. Keep an eye on the small section of high-tide rocks just north of the cafe.
Local Tips
This is an approachable wave that suits everyone from beginners to experts, and it is a favorite with beginners when it is small. Shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, and bodyboards all have a place here depending on the size. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, especially in swells where it is one of the few spots firing, and the atmosphere tends to be somewhat reserved. The paddle is usually fine but can get heavy once the size picks up.
Access
Park either by the beachside cafe or in the large car park to the north.
