Cape Cod Surf Forecast Guide

Cape Cod is a 40-mile sandbar that serves up beach break peaks breaking both left and right over sand. All that shifting geology keeps the setup in constant change, so the best bank on any given swell can move with the tide, the sandbar, or any number of subtle quirks. It can get really good when the right swell lines up.

When It Works

The Cape pulls in swell from north-northeast through east to south-southeast (NNE-E-SSE) and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It comes alive in autumn and winter, with pounding surf through most of the year outside the docile summer months. Expect a decent break that rewards patience once the swell direction and size come together.

Wind and Tide

Look for west-southwest (WSW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from south-southwest through west to northwest (SSW-W-NW). It favors low to mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, though the ideal bank still depends on the sand.

Local Tips

The Cape suits everyone from beginners to experts and handles shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish depending on the day. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved. Come prepared for the season: summer paddles are mellow, but winter brings cold water and air that call for full winter gear. Keep in mind that sharks are a hazard here.

Access

Start your search at the Cape Cod National Seashore in Eastham and work north along the coast toward Wellfleet. Peaks in front of the parking lots tend to be the most crowded, while waves just as good often go unridden farther down the beach. There are multiple parking lots, though fees apply for parking in the National Park.
