Cape Lookout Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Cape Lookout sits behind the longest cape on the West Coast, and that headland shapes everything about the place. The water is about the cleanest and clearest in Oregon, and it stays a beautiful spot to visit whether or not it's breaking. It was once known for a quality righthand reef, locally called Boy Scout Camp, but geological upheaval wrecked that wave, and today the surf is mostly beachbreak with both lefts and rights. On the right day a good left can peel into the channel near the point.

When It Works

The break works over sand and draws swell from south to west (S-W), with a west (W) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. The cape only opens a narrow swell window, so Lookout is unpredictable and the long walk in doesn't always pay off. The wind shadow is the payoff when it does: the beachbreak sits tucked out of the wind, and the north side is naturally sheltered from winter south winds.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind, since a south wind blows the place out. It surfs across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The beachbreak is approachable enough for beginners. The south side has a real localism problem, though: some of the crew are hostile and have been known to slash tires, steal gear left at the trailhead, and drop in on unfamiliar faces. If you run into serious trouble, call the police.

Access

Reaching the south side means a long, steep switchback trail. You leave your car in the lot at the top and hike down, then hope it's still in one piece when you climb back up. The north side is easier, reached through Cape Lookout Campground at the bottom of the cape, where there's camping.
