Cape Mendocino Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Cape Mendocino is the westernmost and windiest corner of the California coast, a wild and desolate stretch where the surf breaks over sand into both lefts and rights. It is a very sharky area, and if you don't live here, you probably won't score it. Two beachbreaks stand out. Sandbox is a wide, flat beachbreak with boulders sitting offshore, clearly visible as you drive in. McNutt Gulch, just before the road heads inland, is punchier, with quick, wedgy, shifting peaks, some rocks, and a semi-steep beach slope.

When It Works

The break draws swell from south to north (S-N), with west (W) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and can be somewhat inconsistent. Both breaks come alive on small swells: Sandbox can be good on any tide with a small swell and zero wind, while McNutt Gulch is surfable on small swells when it is clean.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind to groom the peaks; a north wind blows sideshore. The beachbreaks work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. McNutt Gulch is best on a medium-low tide and needs to be windless or offshore and clean.

Local Tips

This is intermediate-level surf, and the lineup stays quiet. Expect quick, wedgy peaks that shift around, so stay alert and watch for the rocks.

Access

Getting here is arduous, following the twisting Mattole Road out from Ferndale. Once you reach the coast, though, the ocean is easily accessed straight from the road.
