Overview
Capolinea sits in a 500-metre-wide bay north of Napoli, breaking over an uneven reef. Both rights and lefts peel across the rock bottom, and the bay's shape helps keep the lineup sheltered from the wind. It even stays surfable when the swell turns big and windy.
When It Works
The bay pulls in swell from northwest through north to southeast, and northwest is the direction to look for. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, holding up through the bigger, windier days as well.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
With its beginner-friendly reef, Capolinea is a welcoming place to find your feet, though it does draw a crowd when it's on. Water quality is poor, so it's worth keeping that in mind before you paddle out.
Access
You'll find the spot north of Napoli toward Cuma, at Torre-Gaveta, the final stop on the Cumana train line. There's free roadside parking nearby, and local shops Crazy Surf (081 5603971) and Fantastic Centro Surf (081 5602333) can point you to the current conditions.
