Cardiff Reef Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Cardiff Reef is a long, mellow point that peels over a flat reef of sand and rock, throwing both rights and lefts. The wave is usually slow and a touch mushy, which is a big part of its charm: this is one of those beaches where whole families spend the day in and out of the water together. Most days it rewards a relaxed session, but when everything lines up the south peak can switch on and turn genuinely punchy.

When It Works

Cardiff Reef pulls in swell from west to northwest and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It comes into its own through autumn and winter and is a quality setup when it's firing. The best of it tends to show on the bigger swells of the season, when that south peak stops being soft and really starts to turn on.

Wind and Tide

Look for east-northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from northeast to east. The reef breaks through low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a forgiving wave that suits just about everyone, from beginners finding their feet to experts hunting the better sets. It's a natural longboard and funboard spot, though shortboards and fish all get their days here too. Expect a fairly quiet lineup with an easygoing, neutral feel.

Access

Cardiff Reef is easy to find and easy to check, sitting right along Highway 101 where you can eyeball it from the road driving north or south. There's a pay lot right in front of the point, with free parking available just outside the gates along the highway. One thing worth knowing: the water can turn toxic after heavy rain, so it's best to stay out of the surf for a while once a big storm has moved through.
