Caves Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Caves Beach is a long sand-bottomed beach break in Australia, serving up both lefts and rights along its stretch. The beach has enough length to shift character as you move along it: the southern end likes a bit of south in the swell, while north of the offshore islet, through the Hams stretch and up toward the rocky sections of Frenchmans, northeast swell takes over as the better option. There's also a quality long righthander at the reef peak known as Crabbs, which comes to life in east through south swells.

When It Works

Swell arrives here from northeast through east-southeast to south, and northeast is the direction that lines the beach up best. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there's plenty of room between the small days and the bigger ones. Consistency is a strong point, and waves turn up here regularly enough that it's worth a look on most swells.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest wind to groom the banks offshore. The beach can work through most of the tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

The waves are approachable enough for beginners, which is part of the appeal. Expect a busy lineup, so give yourself room and pick a peak away from the crowd if you want space.

Access

There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking if it fills up. Facilities are well sorted: restrooms, showers, camping, and a lifeguard on the beach, with a surf school and surf shop nearby.
