Centinela Surf Forecast Guide

Centinela is one of Peru's best left pointbreaks, a boulder-and-sand point that can peel through as many as four sections when it's firing. Getting there is half the battle: from Huaura, a maze of dirt tracks makes it genuinely hard to find.

When It Works

The point draws swell from the south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and a west (W) swell is the best match. It's a consistent setup that works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. On south swells only the powerful first section breaks, but as the swell swings west and even northwest the sandy inside walls up for very long rides. The outer sections (4-10 ft) are rocky with frequent rips and suit experienced surfers only, while the sandy inside sections (2-7 ft) wall up nicely and work for all standards.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind. Centinela breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The inside sections are approachable for beginners, but the jacking take-off out the back throws up backwash and cliff bounce over barely submerged rocks, so leave the outside to confident surfers. Rips strengthen as the swell builds, and the water runs cold thanks to wind-driven upwelling. Expect a moderately busy lineup, with weekend crowds when the point is on.

Access

There's a surf camp and camping on the beach, though theft is a regular problem, so keep an eye on your gear.
