Chassiron is Oléron's premier spot, a reef that peaks over a rocky, uneven shelf and reels into long, walled lefts alongside shorter rights. It is highly consistent, so it holds up as a reliable option when other breaks go quiet.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with west swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and you can expect both lefts and rights when the peaks line up. The rights only show at lower tides, while the lefts are the longer, more dependable wall.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean up the faces. The spot works at low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Aim to get out by mid tide, before the surge starts pushing over the reef.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Violent rips and a shallow, rocky bottom should keep less experienced surfers out of the water. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works.
Access
Getting in means a fair walk across the rocks, so booties are worth it to protect against urchins on the long crossing over the channelled fishing reef. On land there are restrooms and camping, plus a car park with free parking and roadside parking nearby.
