Overview
Chevalier is a river mouth setup east of Roche a Bateau, where tight-to-shore lefts and rights wedge together and meet in a silty shoredump. It looks unimpressive on Google Earth, but the offshore bathymetry and the angle of the sand bars make it more reliable than it appears, especially on small southeast pulses. The waves break over a mix of boulders and sand. One thing to know before you paddle out: the river carries a sulphurous sediment that stings your eyes.
When It Works
Chevalier draws swell from east through south, with southeast (SE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it will take both low and high period swells, so it is not fussy about what shows up on the buoy. Consistency is moderate, so it is worth keeping an eye on rather than counting on every session.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The spot can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wedging peaks and shoredump suit intermediate surfers most. The lineup stays quiet, so you should have space to find your own peak.
Access
Cross the river east of Roche a Bateau and park roadside beside the grass football beach, then walk through the farm to the spot.
