Overview
Church is the farthest spot south in the Trestles stretch, a sand and boulder point that also breaks at a rivermouth. It throws mostly long, lined-up rights, with the occasional left peeling off the north end. Under the right conditions it fires as a reeling right-hand pointbreak.
When It Works
Church draws swell from south through west (S-W), and it's at its best on a southwest (SW) swell. West swells produce long, down-the-line rights with some hollow sections, while south swells open up multiple takeoff zones, and a big southwest can turn it all-time. It's a very reliable, consistent break that's essentially good year-round, though the standout season runs autumn through winter into spring, with November to February the pick. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. The paddle stays pretty mellow, though the trip back up the point gets long on a solid west swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. Church can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and west swells tend to favor the higher end. It turns semi-hollow on lower tides.
Local Tips
The peeling point suits a wide range of gear, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards, and it's approachable for everyone from beginners to experts. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, with a generally neutral, easygoing atmosphere.
Access
Church sits in San Onofre State Park. Park and walk north from San Onofre, or slog south from Trestles; you can also reach the trail from the Cristianitos exit, or come in via Camp Pendleton. There's a car park with paid parking, plus restrooms, showers, camping, and lifeguards.
