Overview
Claptons Coils is a rare left-hand reef break near Aston Bay. It peels over an uneven reef and can turn on a quality wave when everything lines up.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from the east through to the south, with an east (E) swell the best match. One of the better windows comes when an east swell meets a warm Berg wind. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and it can be somewhat inconsistent, so it takes the right combination to switch on.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits expert surfers who are comfortable reading a shifty, uneven reef. Its fickle, hard-to-read nature keeps numbers down, so you'll usually find a fairly quiet lineup when it's on.
