Overview
Coastguard Beach is a sand-bottomed beachbreak that peels both left and right. The stretch from Nausett Light to Coastguard Beach sees heavy cliff erosion, washing cobblestone and rock into the line-up, which helps sand pile into well-defined bars for short spells. Keep an eye out for currents and the occasional VW Beetle-sized rock sitting in the water.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), with southeast (SE) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. On a southeast groundswell at low tide, the rights link up and run all the way through to the beach, breaking hollow and powerful until higher tides soften things into mushy shoulders.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a busy lineup at times, and factor the currents into where you paddle out.
Access
A large pay car park backs the spot, with a shuttle running down to the beach in summer. You'll also find restrooms, showers, and lifeguard cover.
