Colac Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Colac Bay is a beginner-friendly beachbreak on New Zealand's south coast, offering both lefts and rights over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It is a forgiving spot to learn on, and while it rates below average overall, it has its worthwhile windows. At the south end sits Nicks Point, a righthand walling wave that needs at least 3 ft of swell to clear the rocky coastline.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from south through west, with south (S) swell the best match. It is usable across a wide band, working from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there is plenty of room for both small learner days and bigger sessions when Nicks Point comes to life. Consistency is moderate, so you will find surfable days without it being on every time you check.

Wind and Tide

Look for west (W) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The bay works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is a natural fit for beginners, with the beachbreak sections giving mellow, approachable waves. Expect a quiet lineup, so there is usually room to spread out and take your share.

Access

There is a car park with free parking near the beach, and camping is available if you want to stay close to the water. From Invercargill, head north on North Road (State Highway 6), then turn left onto the Wallacetown Lorneville Highway (State Highway 99). Continue through Wallacetown and Riverton, and at Colac turn left on either Colac Bay Road or Colac Foreshore Road. Follow Colac Foreshore Road southwest to the end of the bay and park near the beach.
