Collaroy Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Collaroy is a sand-bottomed beach break in Sydney, and it splits its personality by the metre. One end can be genuinely good while the other corner ranks as one of the worst surfing beaches in the city, so where you set up matters a lot. At its best it's a friendly, approachable wave rather than a heavy performance break.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with south (S) the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, breaks both left and right over sand, and is moderately consistent through the season. Full, rolling east-southeast windswells are the sweet setup for beginners, giving soft, forgiving faces where soft-toppers can find their feet and often grab rides to themselves. When a big south swell lands it tries to shape a right off the pool, but it lumbers too much to hold up as a real point, so keep expectations to a fun beachbreak.

Wind and Tide

Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind to clean things up. The beach works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call and the mid-to-high push the safer window.

Local Tips

This is a beginner-friendly stretch, which is a big part of its appeal on the right swell. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, so pick your peak and share the space.

Access

You'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, plus a surf school and surf shop close at hand. For parking there's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options; many surfers leave the car behind the golf course or in the residential streets. Seaweed tends to invade this stretch fairly regularly, and on flat days there's some good snorkelling to be had.
