Overview
Contreiras is a left-hand point, also known as Bruxas, Portuguese for "Witches". It breaks over an uneven reef and often below sea level, a setup that has caused many injuries over the years. From shore the wave can look deceptively easy to ride, which is part of what makes it so demanding.
When It Works
The point draws swell from west to north (W-N), and it really comes alive on north (N) swell. On the right direction, medium-sized sets rear up into hollow, tubing sections across the shallow reef. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, but it needs an exacting swell direction to line up properly and can be somewhat inconsistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean it up. The point works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and the shallow reef and rocks in the lineup leave very little margin for error. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's on.
Access
Reach the break by taking the old highway from Porto do Moniz towards São Vicente. There's free roadside parking nearby.
