Overview
Cotonou Rivermouth holds the best waves in Bénin, where a large sandbar at the mouth of the river throws top-to-bottom barrels. The catch is the water: the rivermouth is very polluted, so those barrels usually go unsurfed. Most surfers head instead for La Meduse, a right-hand wedge tucked into the corner of the beach beside the long harbour wall.
When It Works
Expect right-handers peeling over sand. Swell can arrive from anywhere between southwest and southeast, but a south (S) swell is the best match. The spot is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind to groom the faces. It breaks on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
