Crab Island surf guide

Crab Island is located just off the harbor near Doolin Village, a spot that's pretty popular and can get crowded, especially when the waves are firing. It's known for its powerful right-hand wave that’s been a staple for locals over the years. The area can be touristy, but once you’re out in the water, it’s all about the surf.

The waves here pack a punch, handling swell sizes from about 3ft (1m) up to 12ft (3.7m). You’ll typically find the best conditions during low to mid tides, with a preference for E to SE winds. The reef breaks over sharp rock, so be ready for a challenge. This spot is meant for expert surfers; the takeoff can get busy, so some strategy is needed, especially when the locals are out in force. Basically, you’ll be surfing some heavy, powerful rights, so bring your shortboard or a gun when things get bigger.

To access the water, park at the harbor and paddle from the rocks. Be mindful that it’s further out than it seems, so make sure you’re in good shape. The crowd factor can vary, but be prepared to share the waves with locals who know the spot well. While the environment is really clean, don’t underestimate the hazards; the limestone reef is sharp, and if something goes wrong, you’ll have a long paddle back to shore.
