Crab Island on the Gower is a fast, hollow right-hand reef with a near-mythical reputation, breaking well only a handful of times a year. When it does line up, it's a serious wave that peels over an uneven reef and throws a heavy, demanding drop.
When It Works
This is an inconsistent reef, so the good days are rare and worth waiting for. It draws swell from southwest through west (SW-W), with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. A tough current makes the drops harder and getting caught inside is punishing. A rapid left peels off the other side, but the rip over there means a close inspection of the rocks is more or less guaranteed.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. It's a low-tide reef that works best around low tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Crab Island is strictly an expert wave. Between the current, the steep drops and the consequences of getting caught inside, only strong, experienced surfers should be thinking about paddling out. Expect a busy lineup with a devout local crew when it turns on.
Access
Park at Langland, where there's a car park with paid parking. Facilities on hand include restrooms, showers, a surf school and a surf shop.
