Crayfish Factory is a ferocious right-hand reef break and one of Cape Town's best big-wave spots. It breaks over an uneven reef and only starts working when a long-period south to southwest swell of serious size rolls in. This is a heavy, committing wave: expect a steep drop followed by refracting bowl sections that keep coming down a long line-up.
When It Works
The spot needs size and period to switch on. It draws swell from south to west, with a southwest swell the best match. It is usable from 2.4 m / 8 ft to 9.1 m / 30 ft, so this is firmly a big-wave arena rather than an everyday session. Consistency is on the lower side, so it takes the right large, long-period swell to line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to groom the face. The reef works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. Extra length underfoot, real experience, and commitment are needed to make the drop and negotiate the sections that follow. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet when it breaks.
The wave itself is the main hazard here. Getting caught inside or bailing your board can mean punishing hold-downs. Kelp, rips, and sharks are all in the mix too, but they rank behind the raw power of the wave.
