Overview
Crescent Beach is a shifty, sand-bottomed beachbreak and the last surfable stretch before the notoriously sharky Matanzas Inlet. It rarely holds big surf, but when the sandbars settle right it can turn ordinary windchop into fun, peaky waves. Quality here tracks the sand up in St. Augustine: when the banks are good, this place is good, and when they're not, it isn't.
When It Works
The break draws swell from north-northeast through east to southeast (NNE-E-SE), with waves running anywhere from knee-high to a few feet overhead. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Autumn and winter, roughly September through March, are the seasons to watch. On its day it's an average Florida beachbreak, and a notch better once the sandbars are freshly dredged. Everything hinges on the sand, so if you find a good high-tide bar, ride it until it's gone.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west-southwest (WSW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW). The beachbreak can work across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners and intermediates, and it takes just about any board — shortboard, fish, funboard, or longboard all work depending on the day. Expect a fairly quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved.
Access
Beach access is minimal, limited to the Crescent Beach Ramp, with a nominal fee for beach driving from March through August.
