Crouching Lion Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Crouching Lion is a reef and point setup on the south side of Kahana Bay, sitting out in front of the rock formation of the same name on the mountain ridge above the bay. The main draw is a racey, hollow right that peels toward Kahana Bay, and tube-riding skills are essential when it's on. There are also some lefts on the far side of the reef outcrop, though they tend to be short. The wave breaks over lava, rock, and coral.

When It Works

There's usually something to ride thanks to consistent, year-round tradeswell, but that swell often gets tattered by the persistent onshore tradewinds, which blow strongest through summer. The spot really comes alive on winter groundswells from the north through the northeast. It draws its best waves from a northeast swell, though anything from north-northwest through north to east-southeast can work, and it's usable from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.

Winter tends to be the best season overall, but the easterly tradeswell keeps waves coming year-round. Tradeswell isn't usually all that solid, and when it is, the onshore trades tend to be strong too. So the spot is at its best on the less common days when a solid northeast swell lines up with offshore winds from a passing front, and those days deliver long rides and barrels.

Wind and Tide

Look for calm or offshore conditions. The workable wind window runs from southwest to southeast, with south the true offshore direction for the wrapping right. Passing winter fronts are what bring those offshore winds, and early mornings can be clean on lighter tradewind days. It works on low to mid tide, with a rising tide the better call.

Local Tips

The lineup is usually quiet, though it can draw a crowd when the wind turns offshore, especially on a weekend. The atmosphere can feel a bit reserved, so be cool and keep it mellow. It suits shortboards, fish, bodyboards, and kiteboards, and works for surfers ranging from beginner through intermediate to expert.

Access

Getting in is easy, but there's a long paddle out to the break. It sits in a channel, which helps, though the long rides mean long paddles back. Watch for reef, urchins, sharks, and currents.
