Cruz Roja is a sandy beach on a famous windsurfing stretch that only turns on when a strong swell arrives. When it does break, it throws up predictable walls over sand, making it a good spot to work on your cutbacks.
When It Works
It draws swell from west to north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best match, and it really only comes to life on a strong NW swell. The angle of the beach to the swell means it runs exclusively as a right, and only at low tide when everything lines up. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Aim for early morning before the windsurfers head out for the afternoon seabreezes.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind. It breaks at low tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The mellow, predictable walls suit beginners well. Because it rarely works, the lineup can fill in fast when it does, and locals can be territorial when the waves show up.
Access
There are restrooms, showers, and a lifeguard on hand, plus free roadside parking.
