Cullen is a fast beachbreak with the surf clearly visible from the A90. The main peak throws A-frames that break both left and right, and there are a couple of fickle reefs around the rocks known as the 3 Kings. You'll also find a hefty right off the harbour wall and a left reef to the west in Smugglers Cove. Waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand.
When It Works
Cullen draws swell from northwest through north to east, with north swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and the beachbreaks handle waves right across that band. These are fast, punchy peaks, so time your paddle-out for a solid, well-directed swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind to clean things up. The break works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Access
Park in town, where there's a car park, and restrooms are on hand. Keep an eye out for rocks and currents once you're in the water, especially around the reefs and harbour wall.
