Cupsogue Surf Forecast Guide

Cupsogue is a fun beachbreak on the barrier island at West Hampton, tucked between Shinnecock Inlet and Moriches Inlet. It serves up both rights and lefts and is one of the more rippable waves around here. The whole stretch is littered with wave-shaping jetties, and Cupsogue Beach Park's long inlet jetty offers some protection from west winds, so it handles westerlies better than most of the nearby spots. The bottom is sand throughout.

When It Works

The spot draws swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. You need a bigger swell to break near the jetty, but on smaller days there are still peaks further up the beach. It stays consistent and comes into its own from autumn through winter, roughly September through March.

Wind and Tide

Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. Cupsogue works at low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

There's something here for everyone, from beginners to experts, and it takes any board you bring, whether that's a shortboard, fish, funboard, longboard, or bodyboard. Expect a busy lineup on the good days. Paddling out is doable but can get tough on the bigger swells, and it's worth keeping an eye out for novice surfers and local rip currents when crowds gather.

Access

Access is limited on this barrier island. There's a car park with paid parking, plus town-sticker lots and 4WD beach access. Off-roading conditions can be difficult, though the West Hampton jetties are easy to reach. Walking up or down the beach usually turns up emptier peaks. Facilities include restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop.
