Curren's Surf Forecast Guide

Curren's is a long right-hand pointbreak that peels over an uneven reef toward the harbour. It takes its name from Tom's epic ride here during the classic conditions of 1993. On the right day it delivers a heavy take-off on the outside as the swell lurches over the corrugated slab reef, throwing big, difficult-to-thread barrels before opening into fast walls that run all the way down the long line-up. Depending on the swell direction, wind, and tide it can be sectiony and messy or epic and perfect.

When It Works

This is a wave that has to be big, so it only shows up a handful of times and rates as somewhat inconsistent. It really needs a typhoon to switch on. It draws swell from northeast through southeast, with east swell the best match, and works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Simply paddling out and catching a wave takes real experience and confidence once it starts breaking.

Wind and Tide

Look for a southwest offshore wind to clean up the faces. It can break across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

Curren's is for experts only. The reef is nasty, there is plenty of sweep to deal with, and the whole setup demands confidence in serious surf. Expect a busy peak when it works, though the crowd on the tight take-off zone thins out once it gets well overhead and many choose to watch instead of paddle.
