Overview
D Street is a busy Encinitas beachbreak just south of Moonlight. It breaks over sand with lefts and rights, and can be fun when small or powerful and sometimes hollow when everything lines up.
It is generally user-friendly on average days, though rocky reefs sit farther out and can make things more interesting.
When It Works
D Street is exposed to a wide spread of swell and works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The optimal swell direction is southwest, with west, west-northwest, northwest, and southwest swells all in play.
It is dependable through much of the year, especially in summer on southwest swells and in winter when North Pacific energy stacks up. Autumn combo swells can also be good. More straight-on swell can make it close out.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is east, with northeast also favorable. It blows out easily, and afternoon winds can become an issue, so dawn patrols and evening glass-offs are often the better windows.
The optimal tide is mid tide, and a rising tide is better. Mid to low tide tends to let the swell hit the bottom properly; too much water can slow it down.
Local Tips
D Street suits intermediate and expert surfers, especially on a shortboard. It can be playful when small, but the paddle gets more demanding once it is over chest-high.
It is a popular spot and gets crowded when decent. On sunny weekends or when the surf is firing, expect a more competitive lineup.
Watch for stingrays, rip currents, and shallow sandbars at low tide. The water is usually pretty clean day to day, but be cautious after heavy rain.
Access
Access is at the foot of D Street. Park along the surrounding streets; there is free roadside parking in the area, but weekends can get busy and space becomes limited.
Lifeguards are listed among the facilities.
