Overview
Daku is a reef break that throws up a split peak over coral closer to the beach, serving up fun rights and the odd left. The morning session is the one to aim for, before the wind gets up. The coral here is a little less aggressive than on the outside reefs, which takes some of the edge off the dead-coral bottom.
When It Works
Daku draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southeast swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, giving you a decent working window to play with. Consistency is moderate, so rideable days turn up here without the reef switching on every time.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to clean things up. The reef wants some water over it, coming to life on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The Daku beginner reform also needs that higher tide to reform.
Local Tips
This is an approachable wave that suits beginners, and the split peak leaves plenty of room to pick off rights or the occasional left. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's working.
