Overview
Deerfield Beach Pier is a beach and pier break in one of Broward County's smaller coastal towns, just south of Fort Lauderdale. It breaks over sand with a few patches of reef further out, and the wave sets up fairly close to shore. It's a popular, well-known spot, though overall it's a decent break rather than a standout. It earns its keep mainly as a go-to option during windswells, when you want some shelter from the wind. There are better waves in the wider area.
When It Works
The pier is best on north-northeast (NNE) swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, covering everything from waist-high days up to overhead surf. The main season runs through spring, autumn, and winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind to clean it up, with a workable wind window stretching from south-southwest through west to north-northwest (SSW-W-NNW). It works on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This break suits just about everyone, from beginners through intermediates to more experienced surfers, and it handles a wide range of boards, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with a neutral, easygoing atmosphere.
Access
Parking can be tight when the beaches are busy. There's metered parking along the waterfront at around a dollar an hour, with more to be found on the side streets.
