Overview
Destroyers is a shallow, fast reef on Encuentro, the Dominican Republic's surf hotspot. It holds round, hollow lefts, and barrels are all but guaranteed. The trade-off is the reef itself, which is sharp and thick with urchins, so this one is for confident surfers only.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northwest through northeast (NW-NE), with northwest the best match. A more northerly swell tends to break cleaner and more makeable here. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and it's moderately consistent, so expect worthwhile windows rather than surf on demand.
Wind and Tide
Look for a south offshore wind to groom the faces. It breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is expert-level surfing, and the sharp, urchin-covered reef leaves little room for error. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. Pros looking for more can head to the neighbouring left at Mini Tavarua, which peels long over a barely-covered coral and urchin reef.
Access
There's a surf school and surf shop nearby, and parking is free along the roadside.
