Overview
Doot Poktoy is a long, fast right that barrels over a rivermouth sandbank at Lanuza. It reels for more than 300 meters and has been compared to a reverse Mundaka for its power and shape, though it's even more fickle. Scoring it on the right day is one of the main reasons to make the trip.
When It Works
This one only comes together with a big typhoon swell out of the east-northeast and enough sand built up on the north side of the rivermouth. It draws swell from northeast through east, with northeast (NE) the best direction, and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Consistency is on the lower side, so it's more about catching the right window than counting on it.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Low tide is where it gets most tubular, while high tide eases off in intensity but is still a lot of fun.
Local Tips
Doot Poktoy is best suited to intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, and it only really gets crowded if it breaks during the November contest.
