Overview
Double Island Point is a point break that peels extremely long rights over boulders and sand near the lighthouse, with the occasional left picking up on the beachbreak. It's a dependable cyclone-swell option, though sharks, rips, and sheer isolation make it a spot for intermediate surfers and up.
When It Works
The point draws swell from northeast through southeast, with east swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is a reliable call when cyclone swell is running. Consistency is moderate, so it won't be on every day. Attractive sandbars can also set up along the beach highway beside Cooloola National Park.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind. The point works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is intermediate territory, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet thanks to the tricky access. The rights run so long that jelly legs and arms force a walk back up the point, which also trims your time in the water around the area's abundant sharks.
Access
Getting here isn't easy: reaching the point takes a 4WD, and reliable local tour operators and surf schools can sort the transport if you don't have one. There's camping nearby, plus free and roadside parking, though some spots are restricted.
