Overview
Dudley Beach sits inside Glenrock State Recreation Reserve, a green pocket set apart from Newcastle's urban beaches. It doesn't pull the same numbers as some of the city's better-known breaks, but it can still turn on picturesque lefts peeling down the banks. The southern end holds a point option too, though it gets dangerously shallow and hollow on low tides.
When It Works
This sand-bottomed beach break throws up both lefts and rights and stays fairly consistent. It draws swell from the northeast through the southeast, with northeast the best match, feeding those lefts that run down the banks. The southern point comes alive on east-to-south swells. Expect it to work from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Dudley suits beginners, but it gets overhead at times, so keep an eye out for rips and holes when it picks up. The lineup tends to be moderately busy when it's on, and you'll usually find fewer people if you walk up from the car park.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options. Facilities cover restrooms, showers, camping, and a lifeguard on hand.
