Dunnet Bay is a gentle beachbreak that suits surfers still finding their feet. The peaks break over sand and come as both lefts and rights, and while it is a modest wave overall, it serves up a scattering of beginner-friendly peaks whenever a small swell rolls in.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from northwest (NW) at its best, and works through the wider window from west to north. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft, so it stays firmly in the small-and-friendly range. Consistency is moderate, so you will catch it working fairly often rather than only on rare days.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean up the peaks. The bay breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a natural spot to learn, with peaks that reward beginners. Expect a fairly quiet lineup even when it is working.
Access
Park at the car park in the middle of the bay, or near the harbour at the Castlehill end, where roadside parking is free. There is camping nearby if you want to stay close to the sand.
